Distributed Agile Development

The current economic environment is forcing organizations to adopt and implement tactics for delivering more with less to be competitive and survive as a business. Evolution and maturity of distributed business models has made it a strategy essential to remaining competitive in an age of international market integration. In addition, distributed development represents an important opportunity for economic advancement and entry into the global economy.

Organizations are increasingly moving towards a distributed model to create an advantage when competing with others in the same marketplace. When successfully used, the distribution of development efforts creates a savings of both time and money. This savings, when re-invested, can allow an organization to use more of its resources in the areas that are core to its business. Thinking of distributed development as an investment in its core activities, an organization can have more resources available for its core marketplace without sacrificing necessary services.

Most organizations are experts in certain core areas at which their business chooses to specialize. Pursuing such core activities requires organizations to engage in a range of ancillary but important activities - such as IT. These same ancillary activities tend to be areas outside of an organization's specialty. This type of activity is one that can benefit from distributed development.

Solution providers are themselves specialists in certain core areas. By aligning a provider's specialty with tasks that an organization requires but is not themselves a specialist in, a savings of time and money can be realized. As a solutions provider can perform a particular task more efficiently than the organization, the relative cost of performing this activity goes down and the quality improves. A savings is also realized in the time that an organization does not need to invest in tasks that are outside of its core activities. Thus, distributed development is providing a mechanism for an organization to create an advantage when competing with others in the same marketplace.
